About Melodically Memorizing

It all begins with an idea.

Hello there! I’m so thankful you stopped by. Melodically Memorizing exists to first and foremost bring glory to God, our creator, sustainer, author of the Holy Word of God, and for the believer, our Lord and Savior.

Melodically Memorizing is dedicated to memorizing Scripture one melody at a time for the purpose of knowing who God is, guarding our hearts from sin and error by knowing God’s Word, and in doing so, learning to walk with the Lord in righteousness, forsaking sin and loving Him and His Word.

“Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name forever!” || Psalm 34:3

Meet the creator!

It all begins with an idea.

Hey there, friend! My name is Abigail Houston, and I am first and foremost, a sinner saved by grace alone through Christ alone. He has made my heart alive in Him by and through His sacrifice on the cross, and because of His finished work, I now have life in Him. It is because of Him I sing (quite literally) and have joy.

I started Melodically Memorizing July 2020, a year many of us may remember for not-so-pleasant reasons. But as Scripture points out, Christ works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Like many of you, I had a lot of time on my hands, what with being at home because of the worldwide pandemic, and the Lord, so graciously, was convicting me and refining me in many ways. One of the areas He pointed out to me that I was especially weak in was Scripture memory.

I genuinely loved God’s Word, yet also very genuinely struggled to find a way to memorize it and make it stick. I would make excuses like “It’s just an extra discipline, isn’t it?” “I would commit it to memory more, really! I just don’t have a good enough memory for it.” “If only my schedule was less full, then I could really carve out a good amount of time for it.” These things may be true, but if we really value God’s Word and heed the words of Psalm 119:9 “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.”, we would find a way to memorize.

When I was in high school, I was blessed to have a youth pastor with a passion for the Gospel and a deep understanding for why Scripture memory was so important. He was also our worship pastor, so combining his two gifts, he started helping the youth at my church to memorize Scripture by song. He would teach us a passage, sing it through several times week after week, and by the end of the school year, we had memorized an ample amount of Scripture. Fast forward five years or so, and I can still remember those passages and can sing them to you. Why? Because music helps things stick.

Above anything, my prayer is that if you are here, you will be drawn to Christ through the memorization of His Word, which is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12)
